Crowns Q & A

What is a dental crown?

Dr. Khosrovani places a dental crown on top of a damaged tooth to act like a cover or cap. He might suggest a dental crown to:

  • Cover a dental implant
  • Protect and fix a chipped, discolored, badly shaped, broken, or damaged tooth
  • Securely hold a dental bridge in place

Dr. Khosrovani carefully attaches your dental crown on top of your original tooth, so it covers the visible portion of your tooth above the gumline.

Are there different kinds of crowns?

Most crowns are derived from a sturdy ceramic material. A Briter Smile offers different types of crowns, including EMAX and CEREC same-day crowns.

CEREC crowns

CEREC technology involves the in-office scanning, designing, and milling of all-ceramic crowns in just one office visit that usually takes an hour or less.

Dr. Khosrovani digitally scans your teeth before sending the information and data to an in-office milling machine that produces your custom crown right there and then.

EMAX crowns

EMAX is a highly effective brand of dental crowns derived from lithium disilicate ceramic — a strong and aesthetically beautiful material. The EMAX system is most suitable for crowns on your front teeth.

As with  CEREC crowns, A Briter Smile can also fit EMAX crowns in the same day without the need for a long wait, multiple office visits, messy impressions, and temporary crowns.

What is the procedure for dental crowns?

Traditional crowns usually require a few office visits. Your impressions are sent to a lab where your crowns are created. This typically takes about a week or two. You return to the office when your crowns are ready, and Dr. Khosrovani cements your crowns to your teeth.

For advanced CEREC and EMAX crowns, in just one office visit, Dr. Khosrovani typically prepares your tooth by removing the damaged parts and shaping it, so it’s ready to fit your restoration.

After preparing your tooth, Dr. Khosrovani uses the CEREC camera to take accurate mapping images of your tooth and convert the images into a 3D computerized model. Dr. Khosrovani uses this 3D model to design your restoration before sending the data to the in-office milling machine that fabricates your new tooth from an all-ceramic block.

The milling process typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete. Dr. Khosrovani might stain your crown to better match your teeth, before glazing or polishing your crown in a special furnace and cementing the crown to your teeth.
